Default difference between weapon collors

I'm confused
If i put a string on blue bow and it has now same damage and other things the same as gold bow or green bow, so should i still buy green bow?
Will it be better than blue bow with same stuff on it?

The actual color of the item has little to do with it's effectiveness if upgraded properly ... here's the basic shinny: the better the color, the more likely (notice I say LIKELY) it is to have a better inherent mod. Alot of the time, you can get a collector's weapon/armor that has identical stats to a purple/gold weapon and most (I dare say all, but not sure) collector's items are blue items.

In a nutshell, people place way to much emphasis on the color of an item, rather than it's actual stats. "Ooh my bow is better because it's gold" is complete rubbish.

Green items are another story alltogether: they are unique, cannot have upgrades applied to them, can't be dyed, and can pretty much only be customized at your discretion.

Hope this helps

The only blue bows that are going to have the same or similar stats to a gold or green bow are blue collectors bows. Here are a few bow and items facts that you can use to compare them. Also the bow faq in the ranger section is really good to read through.

1. Collector Items in the Desert and South Shiverpeaks can give max damage weapons with maximum mods on them. A good example of this is an Ascalon Bow that is 15 - 28 damage with a damage modifier of +15% damage when health is greater than 50% (or while enchanted or in a stance).

2. Different bow types (long, composite, short, etc and see the bow faq) have different refire rates, arrow travelling times (arcs), and ranges. The Ascalon bow you collect from a certain place will emulate one of these bow types, but you won't be able to tell from the skin of the bow. All of them have the ugly 2 sticks tied together at the end look, but they don't all function the same with regards to range, refire rate, etc. Rare max damage max damage mod bows of all types (long, composite, short, etc) can drop from monsters. So the max Ascalon Bow 15>50 might be a long bow, but the short bow might be max damage 15% while enchanted. So if you want a short bow with a certain damage mod you must get it as a drop. These are just examples. I don't use Ascalon bows so I don't know which type comes with which mods. There are several crafter locations you just have to test them out for yourself.

3. Be careful what you add to a collector weapon of any type. You can't salvage collector items so if you add a 10/10 sundering string, 5/1 vampiric string, or a +5 armour grip to your collector bow you won't be getting those back out.

4. Green items can not be modded and also can not be salvaged. A green bow that fits your needs is a good choice because it not only comes max damage, max damage mods, but the additional modifiers on it are also max stat. Overall there are only a few green bows that fit what I want out of a bow and so I just use the bows that have dropped to me or I have purchased. Some of the green bows are very reasonably priced.

5. While skins have nothing to do with the effectiveness of the item it is nice to have a cool skin that you like to look at. After a few hundred hours of game play I really never wanted to see those damn 2 stick bows again. I'm not really one to pay for a popular skin, but it's fun to have your weapon fit your characters appearance and personae. I like the feathered longbows, eternal bows, and half-moons.

Your best option for finding out about bows and similar stuff is to read the ranger forum. It also has GREAT pet info there too.

I have a quick question that has bothered me for quite a while and I dare not try without reassurance: Lets say I trade in some things for an Ascalon Bow from the collector with a 15>50 mod, am I able to slap on 2 more mods without replacing it? *off the top of my head* a vampiric string and a ..life..grip..?

edit: Thank you for your insight, Fyre and Chippzero ^^

And I was just confused whether Ascalon would be a Prefix hehehe

Collector weapons don't come with bonus modifiers, they only come with inherenct damage modifiers and you can never change those. You will learn most by using the search function and reading the threads about adding 'mods'.

Basically you can add a pre and post name mod. If you add others they overwrite the original mods. So if you have a fiery shortbow of fortitude (+15) and you add a zealous string to it and a fortitude bow grip (+24) you will now have a zealous shortbow of fortitude (+24). Whatever damage the bow had and whatever inherent damage modifiers it had will stay the same.

Yep as the 15^50 isn't a removeable stat just like on all weapons it can't be over written.

1 grip and 1 string no problems.

Don't trade too much for it as it is a collectors item and easy to get, also you won't know for sure what type of bow it is (long, short or Recurve) till you have it as they all the look the same form the collector.

IMO you're better getting the bow yourself to make sure you get the right type, but obviously not everyone can go do that.

The advatage of Blue Collectors weapons (not just bows) is that these are so cheap to get and modify for cheap that you can "customize" them and have an added +20% bonus to damage that people that are using "gold" item weapons do not or might not have (because they might want to sell it later). You can't sell a customized weapon to another player, but, you can continue to modify it.

So, in essence you are "stronger" with a blue collectors weapon than gold weapon users if they don't customize them and you do customize your own. I do everyone of my collector weapons and I kick butt in the arenas.

20% bonus where someone else does not have it makes a BIG difference on say your 15-28 bow, that's another 3 dam to 6 dam (this is like having strength of honor smite enchantment always to me) more than your opponent using the same damage 15-28 "PRETTY" bow that is gold that is not customized. I'll go with stats everytime over vanity.

Ascalon bows are great, they have near the best range and near the best speed. Flatbow being the exception.

I'd really like to see them bring in 2 handed axes and swords and give them different speeds as well, hammers and cleavers gets boring. And I'd like to see some morning stars and maces added to the weapons and new skills for them. And Pikes and Spears and and.... lol Not enough weapons in this game for diversity and varietys sake.

I believe it has been announced by ANet there will be polearms in 2nd Chapter. Hopefully there will be more weapons. Quarterstaff for Rangers or one of those new classes would be cool.
